‘Zootopia’ entertains with funny, educational plot

by HAIDEN HAWKINS/Staff Writer

In the land of Zootopia, all mammals have evolved and have become citizens of this new world. Judy Hopp (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a bunny who grew up dreaming of becoming a police officer. As this was looked down upon, for this job was only held by predator animals. No one gives her much of a chance. Being told by everyone including her parents that she should change her dreams that she should dream smaller. However she is determined to fight for her dream and break the stereotype that only big predators can be in law enforcement.

As Judy successfully completes the police academy being top of her class, she is assigned to a precinct in the heart of Zootopia, the city where predator and prey animals live together in harmony.  Soon Judy will find out that life in the big city is not what it’s all cracked up to be.

The trouble starts when Judy meets Nick Wilde, (Jason Bateman) a fox, who isn’t being served at an ice cream shop because he is a shady fox, of course Hopps takes up for him and helps him get the popsicle he was wanting. Unfortunately the joke is on Hopps, when she discovers that Nick is actually a con-artist. The two end up working together when Wilde is the last to see Mr. Otter that has gone missing. The pair will have to combine forces to solve the case of the missing otter.

As the duo begins to put the pieces together to solve the case, they come to find that there are bigger problems that have come upon the city of Zootopia.  In officer Hopps investigation, she reveals to the public that the predators of the city are going back to their natural ways, bringing fear to the town that at one time brought much joy to all who lived there.

Inside this Disney movie is a real look at what happens when people of various cultures find themselves in the same space, trying to work together for the sake of making it in a new world. Though it’s not always easy and peaceful, there are things to be learned from everyone and everything. That no matter who you are, you do have a voice in this world.

If you’re looking for a fun film that the whole family can enjoy then Zootopia is the movie for you. It brings life lessons to the big screen in a Disney kind of way. It also brings a catchy songs that will have you singing along. As Disney steps away from the princess movies and into a new world of Zootopia, they bring the magic alive. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. A must see for any movie goer.
